I believe Lee Co. is supposed to be on a heat schedule Thursday and Friday (not sure why Friday though).

That's true.I was thinking the same thing a little while ago.And I really wouldn't mind seeing it happen.In the past I didn't want to hear it at all.But I kinda would like to see a big new school here in Wise Co.

They need to go back to opening school when it is meant to be open...that being the last week of august or the first week of september. Politicians pass standards...systems try to jump the hoops they set...and starting school earlier gives teachers more time to prepare their students. They should get away from block scheduling..cuz really it creates more problems than it solves (ie. music and art teachers don't have classes starting around the same time at the primary-middle-and high school levels..thus not being able to be shared among the schools as they once were) And quit training students to pass a test and give them an education once again. I find it awfully strange that nearly all students pass the SOLs and then get a job only to find they can't do math without a calculator...or even count back my change when I buy something in a store. People can say what they want...but it isn't the teachers, it isn't the schools, and it isn't the students...it's the fact that with no child left behind and the VA SOLs has in effect made the quality of education take a step back in the name of glorified test scores on a test that has been made progressively easier in order to make the state look good.

There's a poll on The Coalfield's web site. Looks like the majority of people who have voted so far think school should open after Labor Day.

WISE "? School's out for the summer again in Wise County, or at least for one day for sure. Wise County schools will be closed on Thursday, with a slim possibility kids can stay home on Friday, too.

A week to the day since the county's 2007-08 school year began, temperatures predicted to be in the low to mid-90s on Thursday "? along with griping from high school teachers, students and parents about miserable conditions in their un-air-conditioned buildings through the first three instructional days of the new school year "? prompted Monday's 7-1 vote by the Wise County School Board to close schools on Thursday.

Friday forecasts are for temperatures to be in the low 80s, and schools are expected to be back in session on the 8 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. heat schedule. However, the board directed School Superintendent Greg Killough and his staff to make the call to announce a school closure for Friday if they deem it necessary.

Primary and middle schools in the county are air conditioned. The county's six aging high schools "? five of them were built in the 1950s "? are not. Citizens Marlene Bush of Appalachia and Billie Brown of Coeburn challenged administrators to shut off the air conditioning at the central office to match the sort of working environment expected of high school teachers and students, and Wise County Education Association spokeswoman and teacher Ann Wade told the board that high school classrooms have been too uncomfortable.

Bush said some high school classroom temperatures exceed 100 degrees, and that equates to child abuse. Brown said some Coeburn classrooms have recorded 106 degrees and 80 percent humidity "? in front of fans, no less "? and said on a "feels-like"? scale she read in a Washington, D.C., newspaper, those levels of temperature and humidity equate to feeling more like 180 degrees.

Killough noted that two draft calendar options are established every year by teachers, administrators and a parents advisory committee. All teachers then vote on the calendar they like best, and the board endorses the majority recommendation, or at least has done so in the two years the system has been in place.

Killough also said teachers and parents at the county's primary and middle schools voice displeasure about losing instructional time due to the 8 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. heat schedule at the same time high school teachers, students and parents are moaning about miserable conditions in their schools, so the administration is "boxed in on both sides."?




So the person who shows up, constantly complaining about not needing anything but their 'schoos', shows up and complains that its too hot now.
